Seagate Project for a commercial marine dual guide pivotting arc
Preliminary Analysis

The first analysis consisted in the organization and planning of the work and the related analysis of the problems to solve.

Work planning

Before starting the project, we made a preliminary analysis of the time nedeed to complete the tasks we expected. These mainly consist on the CAD modelling. To be more precise we used the Gantt Chart.

Main issues

With the study of concepts by seagate, we noticed some features that can be developed.

The joint is a key-part, because it has to allow the rotation of the 'L' structure while assuring the proper sliding of the boom's bogie.

The bogies have to support the booms and therefore the force transmitted by the wind. Thus they must be tough and stable. This is achieved with simpler mechanisms.

From our data, winds tend to be quite constant on long routes through the oceans, therefore the need for the booms to move is limited to few times. This means that speed in moving is not a key feature, because the structure will be steady for most time. Of much more importance would be to provide a system that allows the bogies to stay still for long time without the need for energy, thus a passive locking system.
